PROVERBS 28 RELIGION AND POLITICS
You may have heard it said, “There are two things that you shouldn’t talk about in polite company – religion and politics”! Well, Proverbs talks about religion andpolitics, and the two are very much connected. Religion, or lack of religion, affects politics (politics being the way a community or nation organizes itself and uses its resources)…
Transgression (Crossing Moral And Spiritual Boundaries)
Can Lead To Political Instability
By the transgression of a land many are its princes, but by a man of understanding and knowledge, so it endures (Proverbs 28:2). In the time of Israel’s divided kingdom, the reigns of the transgressing kings of the north were generally short. In contrast, the more God-fearing kings of the southern kingdom of Judah enjoyed more stable and longer-lasting governments. Our nation and its leaders have increasingly been imitating the transgressing ways of the northern kingdom, and I am concerned that unless we turn back to God and to morality, we will experience a similar fate. Our people, our leaders, our nation must turn from our very serious transgressions. We must stop ignoring the wise principles the Creator has designed into the universe and communicated through His Word. Our nation must return to being genuinely religious and moral, and regain the wisdom and understanding and blessing and success that come from embracing a Biblical worldview.
Good Religion Is Essential To A Community’s Safety and Happiness
When the righteous triumph, there is great elation, but when the wicked rise, men hide themselves (Proverbs 28:12). When those who are in a right relationship with God are in positions of power, there is a lot of happiness in a city, state or nation. God is honored, which is so very necessary and so very beneficial. When His principles are upheld, truth, morality, righteousness, prosperity, liberty and security result.
By contrast, the wicked – those who defy the Lord and His wise principles – are dangerous to the well-being and the happiness of their city, state or nation. Because they break God’s laws, they create misery and cause harm, and wise people need to protect themselves from them and their policies. That is why it is so important to vote for the righteous and never vote for the wicked. You and your community are likely to be much happier if you do.
Our Relationship To Biblical Values Determines Our Political Allegiances
Those who forsake the Torah praise the wicked, but those who keep the Torah strive with them (Proverbs 28:4). Because of the Fall, and because deep and profound darkness now covers the Earth, human beings are spiritually and morally confused. We don’t always know the difference between right and wrong, good and evil. Now, the Creator has not left us in the darkness. The One Who Lives In Pure Light has sent light into the darkness. He has revealed truth and error. Right and wrong is found in the Torah – the divinely inspired teachings from Genesis to Revelation.
Those who forsake God’s revelation are likely to approve of wicked people and wicked things. In our post-Christian, secular-humanistic society, they will speak approving of homosexuality, extra-marital sex, and divorce without Biblical grounds. They will praise Islam. They will be pro-abortion, approving the killing of innocent babies in their mothers’ wombs, yet at the same time disapproving of capital punishment for murderers. They may be for handing out condoms in schools but against posting the Ten Commandments, praying prayers or even saying the Pledge of Allegiance in those same schools.
Those who forsake the Torah praise the wicked, but those who keep the Torah strive with them. If you know the Holy and Righteous God, and are committed to following His teachings, you are not to remain neutral or stay quiet in the battle between good and evil, right and wrong. You are to strive against, expose, oppose, speak out against, pray against the destructive policies of those who abandon Biblical teachings.
The Lord Detests Religious Pretense, Especially From Politicians
The Creator is faithful and true. He is not deceptive. He doesn’t use words to hide who He is. He would never use religion to put on a false face, and neither should we. He who turns away his ear from listening to the Torah (the divinely inspired teaching from Genesis to Revelation), even his prayer is an abomination (Proverbs 28:9). Because of the Fall, human nature has been corrupted. Human beings are tricky, deceptive creatures. We quickly learn how to hide who we are, to wear a mask in public, to do and say things that won’t reveal our real thoughts and motivations. People will use even holy things, God-things to deceive others.
Christianity is not a smorgasbord, where you can choose the things you like and ignore those you don’t. For example, the President of the United States claims to be a Christian, a follower of the holy Messiah; and even though nature, the Church and the Word of God are clearly against abortion, Mr. Obama supports the murder of innocent children in their mothers’ wombs, even until the very last moments of pregnancy, when the baby is a perfectly viable human being able to live on his own. Even though it is the duty of every Christian to witness to the reality of the Three-In-One God of Israel and call people to turn from their sins, this man never publicly preaches the Gospel of salvation through personal faith in Messiah alone. In fact, he praises the false religion of Islam and never tells the people ensnared by that false teaching that they are in spiritual trouble. He praises homosexuality and pushes its advance in our society, even though the Torah calls it an abomination and warns us that homosexual perversion destroys those who engage in it.
Messiah warned us that we can know His real followers, not by their claims, not by their words, not by their prayers or religious actions, but by their fruits – by their yieldedness to the laws of God that are expressed through their words and their actions. By those standards, it is clear that Mr. Obama is not a Christian. He has turned his ear away from listening to the Torah. He may fool men, but He does not fool the All-Knowing God! So, when a man like this is invited to pray at something like the National Prayer Breakfast, although many human beings may be taken in and impressed with his prayer, the All-Wise God is not. The Infinitely Holy One considers his prayer disgusting and detestable, since it comes from an unrepentant heart that is still in rebellion against the Creator. His prayer is just an outward show of religion without any inward reality behind it. Don’t be fooled by those who use religion to hide their real thoughts and motivations – especially politicians!
Don’t be like those hypocrites! Make sure your religion, your prayer is genuine, is sincere, is acceptable to God! On the awesome Day of Judgment, after you declare how you were a Christian who served the Lord, you don’t want to hear His words: “Depart from Me, hypocritical evil creature who never yielded to My laws and principles. You may have prayed to Me, and called Me Lord, even prophesied, cast out demons and performed many miracles, but I never knew you”.
A special note to my African-American Christian friends: Don’t dare accuse me of speaking this way about President Obama because I am a racist. I don’t judge a man by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character. And if the first Jewish president held the same anti-Torah positions as Mr. Obama, I would be equally critical. In fact, as a fellow Jew, I would be even more outspoken against him because I expect more, not less, of my people, especially leaders. I hold my people, especially politicians, to a higher, not a lower standard.
How Religion Affects Our Individual And National Life
We live in a religious and morally designed universe. We are designed to be moral and religious creatures, yielding to the Creator and His laws and principles. When we are moral and God-fearing, we are in sync with the universe and we are blessed. When we are amoral and irreligious, we are out of sync with the universe and we will damage ourselves and others. How happy is the man who fears always, but he who hardens his heart will fall into trouble (Proverbs 28:14). The person who knows that the Creator exists and understands how great and good He is – the person who fears the Lord and respects Him and His laws – is in harmony with God and with the God-designed universe. As a result, he will be happy and blessed and advantaged.
On the other hand, the person who hardens his heart, who at the core of his being continually turns away from the Creator and His good principles, will fall into trouble. Because he is out of sync with God and the universe and is crossing moral and spiritual boundaries, he will suffer harm and calamity. So, it only makes sense to pursue getting to know the Lord and making sure you respect Him and His ways!
What is true of individuals is generally also true of a group of individuals who form a nation. Since our nation has been hardening its national heart against God since the 1960s, don’t be surprised if we fall into more and more national calamities and disasters.
